Clouded Leopards
There are two Clouded Leopards at WHF. Ben and Mandalay arrived from Port Lympne at the end of 2009.
One of the rarest and most stunning big cat, the Clouded leopard is a unique animal. A medium sized cat, it has sufficient genetic diversity to classify into a species, unique from the leopard and Bornean Clouded Leopard. Length is around three to four feet, weight approximately forty to fifty pounds, with males being generally bigger.
Clouded Leopards are found in the wild exclusively in South East Asia.
Breeding in captivity has proved difficult over the years mainly due to the highly aggressive nature of male Clouded Leopards who often attack and kill females when first introduced to them. A new approach, that gets the breeding animals together before they are one year of age, has proven to be more successful which gives more hope for the survival of this wonderful species of cat.
